Description

La Milpa Ecolodge Research Center on the Rio Bravo is located only three miles from the third largest archaeological site in Belize, the La Milpa Mayan Site. Guests can experience firsthand the rich history of the Maya Civilization.

For accommodations, guests can choose between charmingly rustic and private thatched-roof cabanas with private baths. La Milpa has four cabanas with 8 units that can sleep 16 persons. Or a comfortable and tastefully decorated dormitory featuring state-of-the-art ‘green’ technology that features 100% solar powered energy, no-flush composting toilets and a rainwater collection system which sleeps 30.

Hiking nature trails, jungle trekking and birding are the order of the day at La Milpa. Avid birders can compile a list of more than 150 species during a three day trip to our La Milpa venue.

Location

The Programme for Belize (PfB) is a Belizean, non-profit organization, established in 1988, to promote the conservation of the natural heritage of Belize and to promote wise use of its natural resources. The Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area (RBCMA) is its flagship project where Programme for Belize demonstrates the practical application of its principles.

The business of PfB on the RBCMA is conservation of tropical forest. Since its inception, PfB has secured 260,000 acres of forest in Northwestern Belize that was otherwise destined for clearance. The RBCMA represents approximately 4% of Belize’s total land area and is home to a rich sample of biodiversity which includes 392 species of birds, 200 species of trees, 70 species of mammals, 30 species of freshwater fish and 27 species of conservation concern.

Our La Milpa Ecolodge Research Center lies nestled deep in the forests of northwestern Belize on the RBCMA. This Ecolodge Research Center is located only three miles from the third largest archaeological site in Belize. The La Milpa Archaeological Site is only one of at least sixty other archaeological sites found on the Rio Bravo.
