Zapata Ranch is owned by The Nature Conservancy, is a 108,0000 acre nature preserve that runs aproximately 2,500 head of bison running as a wild herd in 50,000 acres. Bordering the Sand Dunes National Park, this landscape is called the Rocky Mountain Serengeti becasue of the exotic feel of the land, and because of all the wildlife: eagles, bears, elk, bison, antelope, deer, sand hill cranes, water fowl and many other. The ranch has a 15 bedroom lodge, chef and naturalist on staff. Horseback expeditions and hiking expeditions are offered that travel into the Sand Dunes and mountains around the lodge. Come learn about the latest conservation methods being employed in the United States tha tuse cattle and bison to rehabitate the land, learn about this great wonder by participating in the interpretive programs offered.
This is also a working ranch that uses cattle as a tool to regenerate the landscape:programs are available to paticipate in ranch activities. Be prepared for one of the most spectacular places on earth!

The ranch is located in south central Coloado, next to the Great Sand Dunes National Park, in the San Luis Valley. It has eight 14,000 foot mountain peaks bordering the ranch.

Guests are welcome year round. Please dress according to the time of the year, and bring plenty of insect repelent, sun screen, camera, and sturdy hiking shoes.
